In cholestatic liver injury , elevated concentrations of bile acids and salts accumulate in the tissues and within the hepatocytes as a consequence of reduced bile flow , and trigger liver injury . Although the mechanisms of liver damage associated with cholestasis are comples and multifactorial , bile acid - mediated hepatotoxicity certainly plays a definite role in the pathogenesis of the disease
