Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Electronics and Communication Summary: The various challenges of the handwriting recognition problem, on both of its online and offline forms, are addressed. Arabic has been chosen as an example to deploy the novel techniques presented in this thesis. However, most of the concepts of these techniques can be deployed for handwriting recognition of other languages. Complete efficient online and offline handwriting recognition systems that are based on new graphemes segmentation algorithms are introduced. They are based on the local writing direction and the neighborhood geometric characteristics
