Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Oral (Radiology and Diagnosis)
Cone beam computed tomography produces images of isotropic voxel which have equal dimensions in all three planes and thus contributing to higher accuracy, reproducibility and high resolution of the generated images. However, CBCT has some limitation as, streaking artifacts due to metal restorations, beam hardening, low contrast to noise ratio (increased image noise level), increased in homogeneity and image density variability. The skull angles appear to be very important quantitative indicators in various anthropological aspects. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of angular measurements obtained from CBCT scanner (Planmeca Promax 3D Mid) accurate in comparison with real measurements in maxilla and mandible. The study was conducted on 14 dry human skulls. Angular measurement was performed on the mandible and zygoma by goniometer for real measurements and on CBCT software then the skulls were covered by 12 mm of wax to stimulate soft tissue during imaging. It was found that there was a significant agreement between the CBCT and real angular measurements. Also there was a very strong correlation in all zygomatic and mandibular angular measurements readings. From the present work, the following conclusions could be reached: 1-Angular measurements driven from CBCT images of Planameca Promax 3D Mid® machine are accurate for all maxillofacial applications. 2-Angular measurements driven from CBCT images of Planameca Promax 3D Mid® machine are reproducible and reliable for all maxillofacial applications
