Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics Summary: Acquired demyelinating disorders in children are a diverse, challenging group of conditions that are probably under-diagnosed. Early recognition is essential for optimal patient management as some of these disorders cause significant long-term sequelae. Advances in the last decade include establishing consensus definitions and improvement in neuroimaging techniques. These advances set the stage for international collaborative studies to better define other areas such as understanding the aetio-pathogenesis, identifying biomarkers and standardizing treatment protocols of this diverse group of conditions. Objectives: This study aimed at determining the predisposing factors, and clinical characteristics of autoimmune disorders affecting CNS in Egyptian children. Methods: The study included 32 cases of patients with suspected autoimmune CNS disorders, admitted in AbouElrish Hospital over a period of 8 months. We studied the possible risk factors and presenting clinical picture with detailed history and examination and lab and radiological investigations. Results: Majorityof patients (59.4%) were males while females were (40.6%).The patients{u2019} mean age is 68.5 months ± SD 39 months.(75%) of patients had good sun while (25%) of patients had inadequate sun exposure. (53.1%) of patients were exposed to passive smoking at home while (46.9%) ofpatients had non-smoker parents. (18.8%) of patients were exposed to day care versus (81.3%) of patients with no history of day care
