تدور إشكالية الدراسة حول تأثير اكتشافات الغاز على السياسة الخارجية المصرية تجاه دول شرق المتوسط، انطلاقًا من أن تلك الاكتشافات أدت إلى بروز شرق المتوسط كإقليم فرعي جديد، حيث سعت عدد من الفواعل الإقليمية والدولية لبسط نفوذها وامتلاك أدوات التأثير فيه، وقد ركزت الدراسة على المحددات الداخلية والخارجية التي شكلت توجهات السياسة الخارجية المصرية تجاه إقليم شرق المتوسط، كأحد دوائر السياسة الخارجية المصرية التي تنامت في أعقاب اكتشافات الغاز، بالإضافة لأهداف السياسة الخارجية المصرية والمصالح العليا للدولة المصرية في هذا الإقليم، مرورًا بالأدوات التي لجأت إليها مصر لتحقيق تلك الأهداف، كمحاولة للوصول لمستقبل السياسة الخارجية المصرية في إقليم شرق المتوسط.
