Thesis (M.Sc.) -Cairo University, 2023.
Bibliography: pages 48-58.
Background: The patient rated elbow evaluation (PREE) is a commonly used
self-reported outcome measure in patients with elbow dysfunctions. Purpose:
the purpose of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the PREE
into the Arabic language (PREE-AR) and then to examine its validity and
reliability. Methods: the translation process was performed using published
guidelines then the newly adapted PREE-AR was tested on 88 patients with
different elbow dysfunctions. Patients were asked to fill out the PREE-AR twice
within a 2–7 day interval for the reliability assessment which was calculated
using Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) for test-retest and by using
Cronbach’s alpha for internal consistency. Construct and concurrent validity
were tested by calculating the Pearson’s correlation coefficient between the
PREE-AR, the Arabic version of the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand
(DASH-Arabic), and the Arabic numeric pain rating scale (NPRS-Arabic).
Results: the PREE-AR showed an excellent ICC value of 0.970 (CI95%: 0.951-
0.981) and strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.973). The pain,
function, and the total scores of the PREE-AR also showed moderate to strong
correlation with DASH-Arabic (r= 0.645, 0.818, and 0.814) respectively. Also,
a strong correlation existed between the PREE-AR pain subscale and the NPRS-
Arabic (r= 0.79). All the reported P values were less than 0.001. Conclusion:
the newly adapted PREE-AR showed substantial validity and reliability
measures and is recommended to be used with Arabic-speaking patients with
different elbow dysfunctions. Also, the newly adapted PREE-AR does not have
a floor or a ceiling effect and items are loaded on a three-factor structure using
exploratory factor analysis.
