Due to hormonal changes, women are more prone to
sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain during pregnancy and after childbirth. The pain
provoked by sacroiliac joint dysfunction can cause a range of disabilities,
including a continuously intense pain level accompanied by a limited
range of motion. Aim: This study aimed to compare the effect of
extracorporeal shock wave therapy and pulsed electromagnetic field on
sacroiliac joint pain after delivery. Methods: Forty postpartum women
suffering from sacroiliac joint pain participated in this study. Their age
ranged from 25–35 years, and their body mass index (BMI) did not
exceed 30 kg/ m2. They were randomly distributed into two groups of an
equal number. Group (A) received a pulsed electromagnetic field with a
core stability exercise. Group (B) received extracorporeal shock wave
therapy with core stability exercise. Treatment duration in both groups
was 12 sessions over 6 weeks. All patients in both groups were assessed
for pain intensity using visual analogue scale (VAS), Pain Pressure
Threshold (PPT) and functional disability by Oswestry Disability Index
(ODI). Results: In both groups, there was a statistically significant
reduction in VAS (P=0.001) , a significant increase in PPT (P=0.001) and
a significant decrease in ODI (P=0.001), in favor of group (B).
Conclusion: Both electromagnetic field and shockwave therapy were
effective modalities for treating sacroiliac joint pain in postpartum women
with more effect of shockwave in the function disability.
