As a proportion of the total population the geriatric population has been steadily increasing over the decades . Being family physicians we have intimate knowledge of patients' medical , functional and social problems . Thus we are in a unique position to assist in the recognition of elder abuse . Abuse of older or dependent patients by their caregivers have received increasing attention over the past decade and deserve the attention of family physicians
