Surfactant protein D ( SP - D ) belongs to the collectin family of innate immune molecules . SP - D was originally identified as a lung protein and is synthesized by epithelial type II cells of the alveoli and non ciliated bronchiolar cells ( Clara cells ) . SP - D is further synthesized by epithelial cells at various mucocal surfaces in non pulmonary organs
