The systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is defined by the constellation of fever or hypothermia, tachycardia, tachypnea, and leukocytosis, leukopenia, or the presence of immature neutrophils. SIRS can result from numerous conditions but only becomes "sepsis" when infection is etiologic.
