The thesis is divided into two parts: the first presenting the theoretical framework and the second is devoted to analysing the three chosen autobiographies: bell hooks' (1952-) bone black: Memories of Girlhood (1996), Radwa Ashour's (1946-) Apparitions (1998) and Penelope lively's (1933-) Making It Up (2005). In part One, Chapter one (entitled "Autobiographical practices: Searching for a volce in three cultures") looks at the works of pioneers, tracing the development of women's autobiographical practices till today, namely in the United States of America, Egypt anf Great Britain
