Patients with schizophrenia are characterized by the presence of neurological abnormalities that are not specific to the disease but are more prevalent in such patients than in persons with other mental illnesses and normal control subjects . These neurological abnormalities classically have been divided into " hard " signs and " soft " signs . The former are signs that are localizable to a specific brain area , while the latter are considered nonspecific and nonlocalizing
