Extended spectrum Ý- lactamase (ESBLs) are enzymes produced by a variety of gram - negative bacteria which confer increased resistance to commonly used antibiotics . Carbapenems are the treatment of choice for serious infections due to ESBL - producing organisms yet carbapenem resistant isolates have also been reported
