The present study aimed to investigate the possible protective effects of certain hepatotropic drugs (neomycin and lactulose) and certain psychotropic drugs (fluoxetine and donepezil) in thioacetamide (TAA)-induced hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in rats. TAA (200mg/kg, p.o) was administered daily for two successive days at 24 hr interval to induce HE. Neomycin (540 mg/kg, p.o), lactulose (8 ml/kg, p.o), fluoxetine (10 mg/kg, p.o) or donepezil (10 mg/kg, p.o) were administered daily for seven successive days starting five days before TAA administration. The TAA group showed lower motor activity than the normal group by using open field and forced swimming tests
