Numerical analysis is performed to determine the influence of geosynthetics reinforcement on the bearing capacity of soil and to determine the optimum geometry of reinforcement placement. The analyses are carried out using the commercial finite element code PLAXIS®2D version 8 plane strain finite element models. All finite element calculations are based on 15 nodes triangular elements with three points Gaussian integration rule to calculate the element stiffness matrices. The soil material is modeled using Hardening Soil Model (HSM) model. The reinforcement is treated as a sheet of fabric in the out of plane direction having zero bending stiffness and an axial stiffness that was specified as a material property. No compressive stress is allowed in the reinforcement. The developed finite element model is verified by comparing its results with the results reported in the literature. Good agreements are observed among the computed and reported results. The finite element model is then used to perform a parametric study to determine the improving effect of the reinforcement and the optimum reinforcement geometry
