Neural tube defects (NTD) are severe, common birth defects that are caused by partial or complete failure of neural tube closure. Our aim of work is to investigate the role of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism and global DNA methylation status as factors involved in NTDs etiology. A hospital based case-control study was performed. Our results showed a significant hypomethylation in NTDs subjects versus control. Direct association between the frequency of 677TT genotype of the MTHFR gene and NTDs has not been demonstrated in our study
