The adsorption of Crystal Violet as model for cationic dyes was carried out by using Poly vinyl alcohol/Poly acrylic acid hydrogels crosslinked with N,N'-methylene-bis(acrylamide) [PVA/PAA(MBAM)] and Poly vinyl alcohol/Poly acrylic acid /clay composite hydrogel crosslinked with clay [PVA/PAA/clay] that synthesized by 60Co gamma radiation. Properties of hydrogels were investigated as a function of preparation conditions. Swelling properties of the prepared hydrogels were investigated as a function of time, pH and ionic strength to find that equilibrium swelling attained after 48h and maximum swelling of PVA/PAA(MBAM) and PVA/PAA/clay composite hydrogels occur at pH 8 and that swelling decreased with increasing ionic strength. Characterizations of the hydrogels were done using FTIR, XRD, SEM and TGA.
