Refineries are among the most energy consuming industries in the petroleum sector; therefore lots of research efforts are spent to decrease the consumption of the energy in such industries, especially for crude and vacuum distillation columns. Adjusting and optimising the process operation will have a great effect on the energy consumed in the refinery. In addition, energy integration in the pre-heat trains is a key driver in increasing the duty of the pre - heat train of the distillation that leads to less fuel consumption in the fired-heater (furnace). Also decreasing the energy consumption of the refinery process is equivalent to cutting down the total emissions from the refinery unit. Previous methods that cope with the above objectives include column modifications and pre - heat train modifications
