The corrosion behavior of aluminum alloy 6061 friction stir welded joints indicated that the rotation speed controls the location of the most corrosion susceptible zone whereas the preweld heat treatment condition determines the extent of corrosion attack. The corrosion attack in the weld region occurred intergranularly with some pitting in the heat affected zones of the high rotation speed welds and in the stir zone of the slow rotation speed welds. The peak aged joint exhibited the highest corrosion resistance compared to the air cooled or water quenched joints
