Background: Neonatal sepsis represents an important cause of morbidity and mortality especially in low-resource settings. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment of neonatal sepsis improves outcome. objective: The aim of this study was evaluated the effect of neonatal sepsis on mean platelet volume (MPV); and early detection of neonatal sepsis with easily accessible, inexpensive, and widely used laboratory tests. Methods and subjects:cross sectional study was conducted in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU),The target population of this study consisted of 100 neonates who were divided into two groups, cases : 50prematureandfull-terms neonates who had clinical picture of sepsis with or without positive blood culture, andcontrols :50 healthy non-septic neonates of the same age and sex. Mean platelet volume followed in complete blood picture (CBC) of all neonates and its relation to neonatal sepsis. Results: There was significant difference of mean platelets volume between cases and controls, MPV levels to be significantly higher in neonates with sepsis compared to healthy controls Conclusion:our resultsshowedincrease MPV, PDW in cases of neonatal sepsis so we can use these tools as predictors of neonatal sepsis
