Purpose: To evaluate the central macular thickness in patients with open globe injury (OGI) using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and compare it with their fellow normal eye.Methods: This prospective observational cross-sectional study involved 100 eyes of 50 patients with corneal, corneoscleral, or scleral full thickness wounds.All patients underwent thorough ophthalmological assessment at presentation, including slitlamp, dilated fundus examinations and CT orbit imaging followed by surgical repair. Postoperative ocular ultrasonography and macular OCT scans were performed on both traumatized and normal fellow eye within 2 days and 2 weeks, respectively. Results: The Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study map indicated that the differences in macular thickness between the traumatized and normal eyes in patients ranged from -113om to +82 (mean:10.7 om ± 27.8 om) (P > 0.05). Macular pathologies detected were macular edema, foveal atrophy, epiretinal membranes, retinal detachment, RPE abnormalities, ellipsoid zone disruption, and posterior vitreous detachment.There was no correlation between OCT findings and the age, sex of the patient, axial length, mode or zone of trauma, anterior or posterior segment associated injuries. No correlation between macular thickness and site, mode of trauma or ultrasound findings was detected
