Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia in neonate is a cause of serious concern due to its adverse effects on the neurocognitive function in infancy. Although the iron transfer from the mothers to the foetus occurs against a concentration, maternal iron is the only source of fetal iron during pregnancy. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine iron status of neonates at birth and whether it was affected by maternal iron deficiency anemia. Methods: The study included 98 mothers and their newborn delivered in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, Cairo University between October 2019 to March 2020 ,we took a detailed history from the mother including (Age, Obstetric code, History of maternal illness, History of maternal iron supplement intake during pregnancy , Gestational age). We measured newborn birth weight and assessed their gestational age . In addition blood samples were collected from the mothers and their newborn to asses their iron profile and Complete blood counts. Resluts: We found that 11.2% of the mothers have biochemical iron deficiency and 36.7% of mothers have iron deficiency anemia while 9.2% of neonates have biochemical iron deficiency and 5.1 %of neonates have iron deficiency anemia Neonatal iron deficiency anemia was significantly higher in those born to non-iron supplemented mother (10.6% versus 0.0%) (p = 0.023)The incidence of maternal iron deficiency anemia was significantly lower in women who received antenatal iron supplementation with p value <0.001
