Summary, etc. The stigma of mental illness can manifest in many forms including public, structural and self or internalized stigma. Self-stigma refers to the process through which people with mental illnesses accept others’ negative attitudes about them, internalize and apply these beliefs to themselves, signifying a shift in identity they previously held. Despite its clinical significance and implications self-stigma is considered the least researched topic in the area of stigma and help seeking. (Yanos et al., 2008) People with mental illnesses are considered as one of the most stigmatized groups. Schizophrenia is a serious and highly stigmatized mental illness that often has disastrous personal and social consequences for the quality of life. Most previous studies focused on schizophrenia, only few studies included bipolar disorder, even more few were concerned with stigma in youth age group. (Karidi et al., 2015)
