| Summary, etc. | Systematic searches were done on the following electronic databases, MEDLINE / PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web search, SAGE, Google scholar, Scopus, since the inception of these databases until February 2023. Fifty studies were included in the current review, forty-four of them were used to determine the association between OA & DM, and six studies did not have baseline data for the association, ten studies used to calculate risk of knee osteoarthritis in diabetic patients. For risk of OA in a DM versus non-DM subjects, among 4148 patients, the overall OR was1.24 (CI 1.14 to 1.35), with high heterogeneity (I²=80%). Seven studies used for risk of DM in an OA versus non-OA subjects, among 2468 patients, the overall OR was 2.26 (1.28 to 4.01). The mean OA prevalence among diabetic patients was 34.29%, while DM prevalence among OA patients was 23.45%. There is strong association between diabetes mellitus and knee OA and each of them is leading cause for other defined by increased the prevalence of OA among diabetic patients and vice versa. <br/><br/> |
