| Summary, etc. | Curiosity, surprise, and suspense, as essential elements of literature, are closely analysed in selected works of crime fiction to account for these narratives’ appeal and the readers’ engagement. The research focuses on the narrative techniques and aspects of crime fiction that are used to create curiosity, surprise, and suspense within the discourse of three crime novels from three different time periods and different sub-genres, namely Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet (1887), Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express (1934), and Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon (1981). The narrative techniques and aspects of double narrative, focalization, and place are examined by means of a narratological method of approach. Furthermore, the research examines the following texts in relation to each other to prove how each sub-genre of crime fiction does not reject the conventions of classic detective fiction but strives to present and recreate them in a new creative style to conform to the socio-cultural development of society and to achieve the desired literary effects |

| Summary, etc. | منذ نشأتها في إنجلترا في القرن الثامن عشر وصلت قصص الجريمة إلى ذروة شهرتها عند ظهور شخصية المحقق (شرلوك هولمز) للكاتب (آرثر كونان دويل)، ثم مرة أخرى في الفترة ما بين الحربين العالمية الأولى والثانية. وعلى الرغم من أن قصص الجريمة من أنواع الأدب المعترف بها وذات قيمة جمالية ولها العديد من القراء المتفانين إلا أنها مجال للانتقاد فبعض النقاد يعتبرونها مستوى ضعيفاً من الأدب للتسلية فقط وليس للدراسة والنقد. ولذلك يدرس هذا البحث استراتيجيات السرد الروائي لإحداث الفضول والدهشة والإثارة في قصص الجريمة بتطبيق نظريات السرد، وسوف يتتبع البحث بداية قصص الجريمة ومراحل وأسباب تطورها مما يساعد على فهم أسباب جذبها للعديد من الجمهور الوفي. ومن ثم سيتم فحص استراتيجيات السرد الروائي مثل: الازدواجية القصصية، والتبئير، والمكان القصصي بتطبيق نظريات السرد في هيكل ثلاث من الروايات البوليسية وقصص الإثارة والتشويق: دراسة في اللون القرمزي لـ (آرثر كونان دويل) (1887) وجريمة في قطار الشرق السريع لـ (أجاثا كريستي) (1934) والتنين الأحمر لـ (توماس هاريس) (1981). وسيحاول البحث المتقدم أن يثبت أهلية قصص الجريمة وخصوصا الروايات البوليسية وقصص التشويق للانضمام إلى المستويات العليا من الأدب المعترف بها وتفنيد آراء النقاد المستنكرين لذلك.<br/><br/> |
