Summary, etc. | This Thesis examines the application of implementing user-defined characteristics of inverse time overcurrent relays as a benefit of utilizing numerical relays than the predefined standard curves along with the aid of Fault Current Limiters (FCL) in point of common coupling with the main grid in highly looped microgrid with intensive use of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) units. The proposed coordination strategy relies on considering relay’s constant (A and B) as a variable setting to determine the operating time of Directional Overcurrent Relays (DOCRs). In addition to the commonly used relays settings along with (FCL) in point of common coupling.<br/>Optimal FCL value together with optimal four relay settings are considered to achieve minimum overall relays operation time. The problem is formulated as constrained non-linear programming (NLP) problem with the main objective of finding the minimum overall time of operation of relays considering main and backup relays in different microgrid’s modes of operation at different fault locations and is solved using gradient-based method through MATLAB’s built in function find minimum of constrained nonlinear multivariable (fmincon) in the Optimization Toolbox. Thesis strategy is tested on IEEE 30-bus looped power distribution system equipped with synchronous generators. Results attained by proposed coordination strategy are compared with conventional strategy and shown a reduction in overall relay operating time and minimum value of FCL. |
