Summary, etc. | Reading is one of the main activities which play an essential role in the formation of children’s identity, especially reading materials such as picture books. Due to this crucial formative role, the existence of gender bias or gender stereotypes in children’s books can have a negative influence on how children’s identity develops and, hence, on their attitudes and behaviors in the future. In relation to the above, this study investigated whether gender stereotypes were still presented in children’s picture books written in English, given the current changes in women’s roles in society. Thus, a comparative diachronic analysis was conducted in order to examine the representation of gender in a selection of 16 Disney Picture Books published between 1970 and 2018. The investigation depended mainly on how the choice of adjectives is used to describe both genders in terms of physical appearance and personality traits. CDA was used to interpret the significance behind choice of words that depict both genders besides the analysis of how the illustrations are used to depict both genders by using multimodal discourse analysis as a means of qualitative analysis. The findings revealed that the representation of both genders, especially the female characters, witnessed stereotypical portrayal in the books that were published in the past. A remarkable shift occurred in how both genders were portrayed in the books that were published in the recent time, especially the new millennium, particularly in regards of how the female characters were portrayed. |

Summary, etc. | تعتبر القراءة من أهم النشاطات التي تلعب دورا" جوهريا" في تكوين هوية الأطفال و خاصة الكتب المصورة للأطفال. و نتيجة لهذا الدور الفعال، إحتمالية تواجد أي شكل من أشكال عدم المساواة بين الجنسين في كتب الطفال له تأثير سلبي بشكل مباشر علي تطوير هوية الأطفال و بالتالي علي سلوكياتهم و تصرفاتهم في المستقبل. و فقا" لما ذكر سابقا، بحثت هذه الدراسة إمكانية إستمرار وجود أي شكل لعدم المساواة او الغلبة أو وجود للنماذج النمطية بين الجنسين في كتب الأطفال المصورة باللغة الإنجليزية، مع الأخذ في الإعتبار التغيرات الطارئة في دور المرأة في المجتمع حاليا". و لذلك أعتمدت هذه الدراسة علي المقارنة التزامنية لبحث تمثيل الجندر في كتب ديزني المصورة للأطفال التي تم نشرها سابقا" من 1970-1996 و الكتب التي تم نشرها حديثا" من 2009- 2018. كما أعتمدت هذه الدراسة علي التحليل التزامني النقدي و اللغوي و المتعدد الوسائط من أجل مقارنة كيف تم تصوير الجندر في النماذج التي تم اختيارها تزامنا" مع التغيرات الراهنة. أوضحت النتائج ظهور التصوير النمطي لكلا من الجنسيين وخاصة الشخصيات النسائية وذلك في الكتب التي تم نشرها في الثلاث عقود المنصرمة. كما أظهرت النتائج أيضا تحولا ملحوظا في تمثيل الجندر في الكتب التي تم نشرها في الألفية الجديدة، وخاصة الشخصيات النسائية. |
