| Summary, etc. | The present study attempted to investigate the phenomenon of explicitation in selected American English popular science articles and their Arabic translations. The study focused more particularly on instances of optional explicitation. In contrast to obligatory explicitation that is motivated by differences in the syntactic and semantic structures of the two languages, optional explicitation is voluntarily performed by the translators in order to compensate for any lack of knowledge among target language readers or to avoid stylistically awkward translations. The aim of the present study was to identify the types and functions of optional explicating shifts that occurred through the Arabic translation of the selected articles as well as examine the consequences of these shifts on the levels of explicitness of the target texts. To achieve this aim, Becher’s (2011) framework of types of shifts: interactional, cohesive and denotational shifts was adopted. For the purpose of analysis, this study analyzed 30 American English articles published by the official website of the Scientific American magazine and their Arabic translations published by Lel Elm للعِلم magazine during the period from 2017 to 2019. The analysis revealed that popular science translators perform optional explicitating shifts frequently. It showed that denotational and cohesive shifts were much more salient in the data, as they represented 49 percent and 48.8 percent, respectively, of total explicitating shifts, followed by interactional shifts with 2.2 percent. | Summary, etc. | تناولت هذه الدراسة ظاهرة التصريح الاختياري (optional explicitation) فى عينة مختارة من مقالات العلوم المبسطة وترجماتها إلى العربية. وعلى خلاف التصريح الإجباري (obligatory explicitation) الناجم عن الاختلافات في الأبنية التراكيبية والدلالية بين اللغتين، يستخدم المترجم التصريح الاختياري طوعًا في ترجمته لتعويض تفاوت المفاهيم الثقافية بين اللغة المصدر واللغة الهدف ولتجنب الترجمات الركيكة من ناحية الأسلوب. وهدفت هذه الدراسة إلى تحديد أنواع التصريح الاختياري المستخدم في الترجمة ووظائفه، بالإضافة إلى التحقق من تأثير عمليات التصريح الاختياري على مستوى وضوح نصوص اللغة الهدف. ولتحقيق هذا الهدف، تبنت هذه الدراسة الإطار النظري لأنواع التصريح الذي أعده بيتشر (2011) والتي تنقسم إلى: التصريح التفاعلي (interactional) والتصريح الترابطي (cohesive) والتصريح الدلالي (denotational). واستخدمت الباحثة في تحليلها 30 مقالة للعلوم المبسطة نشرت في مجلة (Scientific American) ونسختها العربية مجلة "للعلم" خلال الفترة بين 2017 و2019. أظهرت نتائج الدراسة أن استخدام التصريح الاختياري في ترجمة العلوم المبسطة أمر متكرر الحدوث. كما أوضحت النتائج أن حالات التصريح الدلالي والترابطي كانت هي السائدة، حيث مثلت 49% و48.8%، على التوالي، من إجمالي حالات التصريح الاختياري، يليها حالات التصريح التفاعلي بنسبة 2.2%. وكشفت الدراسة عن عدة عوامل أدت إلى اللجوء لاستخدام التصريح. |
