Summary, etc. | Aim: To assess the effect of electrolyte concentration and electric potential on electrochemical dissolution of NiTi samples and HyFlex EDM files in simulated root canals. Methodology: This study involved acquiring anodic polarization curves and redox curves to establish the requisite conditions for dissolving endodontic files. Anodic polarization of 26 NiTi samples and HyFlex EDM files was implemented, and a comparative analysis using analysis of variance (P < 0.05) was conducted to assess the impact of varying concentrations of solutions and applied potentials. Two solutions were used: solution 1 [12 g/L NaF + 1 g/L NaCl] and solution 2 [12 g/L NaF + 180 g/L NaCl] at 2 different potentials 200 mV and 400 mV. This polarization was conducted to evaluate the dissolution of NiTi samples and HyFlex EDM files within simulated root canals. Weight loss measurements were recorded for the NiTi samples. Furthermore, a Scanning Electron microscope with embedded EDX analysis was used to examine the corrosion behavior of the tested samples.Results: Solution 2 [12 g/L NaF + 180 g/L NaCl] at 400 mV was associated with the most corrosive effect. Observation of the HyFlex EDM file tip revealed a gradual reduction in its size within the initial 30-minutes period. Anodic polarization of file fragments in simulated root canals for 60 minutes led to their partial dissolution. The analysis conducted using Two-way ANOVA indicated a significant impact of solution concentration (p=0.001), whereas no significant effect was observed for the applied voltage with a p-value of p=0.232. Conclusion: Solution 2 (12g NaF+180g NaCl) at 400mV led to the electrochemical dissolution of NiTi samples and HyFlex EDM files. Within simulated root canals, the anodic polarization of HyFlex EDM instruments at a current of 10 mA led to their gradual consumption as the polarization time increased. |
