| Summary, etc. | A meal is a complex sensory experience, that’s why eating as one of the areas of daily life activities may be negatively affected by sensory aversions. Many parents express frustration over young children being “picky eaters,” and feeding issues frequently become a struggle for families.<br/>Objectives: This study aimed at assessing the oral sensory function in preschool children with parents reporting feeding difficulties to explore if it is an isolated entity in the presence of normal sensory processing or is it part of a generalized sensory processing disorder.<br/>Subjects and methods: 106 caregivers of children attending Phoniatric clinic at Kasr El Aini Hospital for a feeding difficulty and swallowing assessment aging less than 5 years, irrespective of their gender after exclusion of a structural, anatomical or organic cause of feeding and swallowing difficulty were recruited in this study. They were all asked to fill the designed Feeding sensory questionnaire (FSQ) and the translated Toddler/child sensory profile questionnaire (TSPQ).<br/>Results: There was a significant positive moderate correlation between the scores of the Toddler/child sensory profile questionnaire (TSPQ) and Feeding sensory questionnaire (FSQ) and between the total score of the Feeding sensory questionnaire (FSQ) and the scores of touch processing, oral sensory processing and behavioral responses associated with sensory processing sections of the Toddler/child sensory profile questionnaire (TSPQ) among all the subjects under study (N= 106).<br/>There was a significant positive strong correlation between the scores of the Toddler/child sensory profile questionnaire (TSPQ) and the Feeding sensory questionnaire (FSQ) and significant positive moderate correlations between the total score of the Feeding sensory questionnaire (FSQ) and the scores of general processing, auditory processing, visual processing, touch processing, oral sensory processing and behavioral responses associated with sensory processing sections of the Toddler/child sensory profile questionnaire (TSPQ) among the autistic cases under study (N=31).<br/>Conclusion: Children with sensory processing disorder mostly have oral sensory problems as well. This correlation is stronger among patients diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). |
