Summary, etc. Background: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is well-recognized therapeutic
modality for treatments of bone marrow or immune system that is damaged or defective either
because of malignant or non-malignant causes. Moreover, patients receiving HSCT are at high
risk for infection as result of induced suppression of body’s immune system, administration of
massive chemotherapy, immunosuppressive drugs and use of antibiotic therapy as prophylaxis
before and after transplantation. Aim of the study: The aim is to assess risk factors for
healthcare acquired infections among patients with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Design: A descriptive/ exploratory research design was utilized to this study. Setting: The
study was conducted in the post Stem Cells Transplantation Department of Nasser Institute for
Research and Treatment Hospital in Cairo, Egypt. Sample: A purposeful sample of 62 adult
male and female patients after HSCT was recruited to achieve the aim of current study. Tools:
Data was collected using three tools: (a) Personal and Medical Background Data Form
(PMBF), (b) The Infection Prevention Checklist (IPC) and (c) Healthcare Acquired Infection
Checklists (HAIC). Results: Study findings denoted that, the mean age was 35.5±12.9 and
more than half of the study participants were males. The mean period of hospital stay was 37
days, which significantly increased risk for infection post HSCT at (P =0.000) as well as
smoking habits (P =0.008) were significantly increased risk for infection after HSCT. A
statistical significance was found between participants who had comorbid disease (X2 = 9.96, P
=0.001). The cumulative incidence of infection post-HSCT, 50% of the study participants
developed blood stream infection, 19.4% had pneumonia and 12.9% had urinary tract
infection. Conclusion: The current study concluded that, risk factors for healthcare acquired
infection were age, duration of hospital stay, number of chemotherapy cycle, infection
prevention control and duration of central venous line insertion. Moreover, blood stream
infection is the most common and serious healthcare infection among patients with HSCT.
Recommendation: Mandatory regular educational program of updated standard precaution
regarding infection control must be planned to improve quality of patient care. Also, further
studies should be conducted to assess different types of infections.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
