| Summary, etc. | Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the clinical performance of 3D printed PEEK inlay compared with milled PEEK inlay versus milled indirect resin composite inlay according to Modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria over one year period of time.<br/>Methodology: In this clinical trial participants were divided into three groups according to the tested material and technique, where (R1) represents teeth restored with 3D printed PEEK inlay, (R2) represents teeth restored with milled PEEK inlays while (R3) represents the comparator group which are the teeth restored with milled composite inlays, where sixteen patients in each group were restored with a total number of forty-eight inlays restoration in all patients. After placement of the inlay restorations, they were assessed at three different time intervals (T). Where each restoration was assessed immediately at baseline (T0), six months (T1) and twelve months (T2) using the modified USPHS criteria. The criteria evaluated were marginal adaptation, retention, marginal discoloration, color match, anatomic form, surface texture, postoperative sensitivity, and secondary caries.<br/>Results: The results in this study were ordinal data. It was analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn’s post hoc test for intergroup comparisons and using Friedman’s test followed by Nemenyi post hoc test for intergroup comparisons. Categorical data were compared using chi-square test.The significance level was set at p≤0.05 within all tests. At all intervals, majority of the cases in all groups had an alpha score and the difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Except for the color match, all the cases in the PEEK groups had a bravo score, the difference was <br/>statistically significant in the intergroup comparison between PEEK groups and the milled composite group (p<0.001), Yet there was no significant difference between scores measured at different follow-up intervals (p>0.05). <br/>Conclusions: Both techniques, the subtractive and the additive manufacturing and materials the PEEK and the resin composite together offer clinically acceptable functioning restorations over the one year follow up period. PEEK material can be used as a suitable alternative to commonly used indirect composite intra-coronal restorations in posterior area. However, improvements in term of surface texture and esthetics are required. Further comparative studies over a longer period are required to strengthen the findings of this study. |
