| Summary, etc. | This thesis presents a comprehensive study of feminist caricature as a form of agency and subversion within the contemporary social, cultural, and legal order. Drawing from a rich theoretical framework encompassing Hobbes's concept of Superiority, Freud’s theories on humor in Jokes and their Relation to the Unconscious, post-structuralist feminist theory with a focus on Nancy Tuana’s The Less Nobel Sex, and the intersectionality theory of Crenshaw, the study explores the power of feminist caricature in critiquing patriarchal representations of women. The study's theoretical infrastructure is firmly rooted in Bourdieu’s Cultural Practice and Adorno’s and Horkheimer’s “Culture Industry”, thereby weaving together psychoanalysis, poststructuralism, and feminist anarchism. The primary focus is on feminist caricature as a form of humor that challenges cultural stereotypes, discriminatory legislation, and sexual stratification. The study utilizes an in-depth analysis of Doaa Al Adl’s 50 Cartoons and More on Women (2016) and Jacky Fleming’s The Trouble with Women (2010) to demonstrate the transformative potential of feminist humor as a pathway towards feminist agency. In addition, the thesis provides a panoramic view of how feminist cartoons address social and political commentary across more than 15 countries, linking this to the interdisciplinary theory of intersectionality and the varying levels of oppressive practices experienced by women in post-colonial societies versus women with white privilege. The interdisciplinary approach employed in this thesis offers a nuanced interpretation of feminist caricatures, positioning them as a potent critique of the patriarchal representation of women within various social and cultural orders. Through this analysis, the study posits that feminist humor can indeed achieve equilibrium within the man/woman binary, creating a space for criticism of gendered epistemology. |
