Summary, etc. | The ground floor: often wide open for shops or parking, but also a potential weak spot in tall buildings. This study sheds light on the "soft storey" phenomenon, where stiffness differences pose a significant risk. We demonstrate that various retrofitting methods, from simple brick walls to intricate steel bracing systems, can significantly improve the building's resistance to lateral forces, albeit with varying degrees of effectiveness. Notably, even the least effective option, a truss beam above columns, reduces floor displacement by up to 42%. The real power lies in brick walls, achieving up to 85% reduction. While intersecting diagonal (X) bracing boasts the highest reduction, diagonal (D) bracing emerges as the preferred choice due to its cost-effectiveness and comparable performance. |
