Summary, etc. Aim: The aim of the study is to clinically evaluate the efficacy of external stain removal of an activated charcoal-based tooth paste versus calcium carbonate /perlite tooth paste and to investigate enamel surface abrasion for both toothpastes in vitro. Material and Methods: A total of 32 Patients with extrinsic stains on anterior teeth were divided into two equal groups (n=16); Group 1: patients using signal Complete 8 Charcoal toothpaste (Intervention group), Group 2: patients using signal whitening moonlight toothpaste (Control group) 4 weeks brushing (twice daily for 1 min) was performed. Extrinsic tooth stain was measured using the Macpherson modification of the Lobene stain index. Additionally, for the in-vitro test a total of 36 specimens obtained from human permanent premolar teeth were randomly divided into 2 groups (n=18): Group-1: brushed with signal Complete 8 Charcoal toothpaste (intervention group); Group-2: brushed with signal whitening moonlight toothpaste (Control group). After 3 minutes of brushing with powered toothbrush, the mean roughness value (Ra) of the brushed samples was measured using an atomic force microscope (AFM) to assess the surface abrasion of enamel. Data were analysed using Mann Whitney U test, independent t test, Wilcoxon test and paired t test with statistical significance level set at (P ≤ 0.05). The confidence limit was set at 95% with 80% power and all tests were two tailed. Results: There was no statistical significant difference between the groups at baseline and post brushing in the total MLSI score as (P > 0.05). However, statistical significant differences were found in the total MLSI score between baseline and post brushing in each group (P ≤ 0.05). While enamel surface abrasion results showed no significant differences between groups at baseline (P > 0.05). On the contrary significant differences were evident in enamel surface abrasion between groups post-brushing (P < 0.0001).<br/>. <br/>Conclusions: The tested activated charcoal-based dentifrice showed a similar and clinically perceptible performance in reducing extrinsic stains after 4-weeks of brushing as calcium carbonate/perlite-based dentifrice. As well as activated charcoal-based dentifrice maintained enamel surface integrity post-brushing .Calcium carbonate/perlite based dentifrice caused substantial degree of abrasion to the surface of enamel.

Summary, etc. أجريت هذه التجربة السريرية العشوائية لمقارنة قدرات إزالة البقع الخارجية لمعاجين الأسنان التي تحتوي على الفحم المنشط والمعاجين الأخرى التي تحتوي على كربونات الكالسيوم/البيرلايت، وكذلك لفحص تآكل سطح المينا في المختبر لكلا معاجين الأسنان أجريت الدراسة الحالية على 32 مشاركًا بالغًا. تم اختيار المريض من خلال العيادات الخارجية بالأقسام التحفظية بكلية طب الأسنان، جامعة القاهرة، مصر. تم إجراء الجزء المعملي على 36 من الضواحك العلوية الدائمة البشرية التي تم إخراجها من المرضى الذين يحتاجون إلى خلع أسنانهم لأغراض تقويم الأسنان من العيادة الخارجية بكلية طب الأسنان جامعة القاهرة تم تقسيم المشاركين والعينات بشكل عشوائي إلى مجموعتين؛ المجموعه الضابطه التي عولجت بمعجون الأسنان المعتمد على كربونات الكالسيوم / البيرلايت، ومجموعة التدخل التي عولجت بمعجون الأسنان المعتمد على الفحم تمت ملاحظة النتيجة النهائية للبقع وتآكل السطح، وتحليلها والإبلاغ عنها بعناية على فترات متابعة مختلفة (4 أسابيع للمشاركين بعد تنظيف الأسنان بالفرشاة) و3 دقائق تعادل تنظيف الأسنان بالفرشاة مرتين يوميًا لمدة شهر واحد للعينات تظهر الدراسة عدم وجود فروق بين المجموعتين فيما يتعلق بفعالية إزالة البقع، في حين انخفض تآكل سطح المينا بعد تنظيف الأسنان بالفرشاة باستخدام معجون أسنان الفحم مقارنة بمعجون أسنان كربونات الكالسيوم / البيرلايت الذي لا يسبب أي اختلافات في سطح المينا
