| Summary, etc. | Aim: The current clinical study is aiming to evaluate their clinical outcomes of conserved chalky white demineralized enamel margins with total removal of demineralized enamel margins in class v cavities restored with composite in patients with acute carious cervical lesions.<br/>Material and methods: A total of 34 participants received 34 cervical restorations randomly allocated either; for experimental group, class V cavity prepared at surface was done while preserving the chalky demineralized enamel margins or for control group, standard class V cavities were prepared at surface while totally removing carious chalky demineralized enamel margins. After cavity preparation, restorative materials were applied according to manufacturers’ instructions. Restorations were evaluated using modified USPHS criteria by two blinded assessors at baseline, 6 and 12 months also, evaluated the color change parameter of them by using dental digital photograph with cross polarizing filter at the same intervals. Intergroup comparisons for ordinal data were done utilizing Mann-Whitney U test while intragroup comparisons were done using Freidman’s test. Values for both the mean and the standard deviation (SD) were utilized to present numerical data. They were examined for normalcy using the Shapiro-Wilk test and the data distribution. The data exhibited a parametric distribution, and the analysis method was repeated measures ANOVA with the Bonferroni post hoc test for intragroup comparisons, and the independent t-test for intergroup evaluations.<br/> Results: By using updated USPHS criteria, an evaluation is conducted after a year, there was no statistically significant difference between both groups for surface texture, marginal adaptation, marginal discoloration, retention and gingival inflammation (P = 1, P = 0.5050, P = 0.1, P >0.05 and P = 1, P = 1) respectively. Regarding color change ΔE, for both groups, The values of the groups assessed at various intervals did not significantly differ from one another, with the value recorded after a year being significantly greater than the other. (p<0.05). <br/><br/>Conclusion: This study concluded that preservation of the demineralized enamel margin in cervical preparations did not compromise the clinical performance of the bonded resin restorations. It is more conservative to retain the demineralized enamel margin and avoid unnecessary bevelling of the cervical preparations. Digital photography and digitized software for dental shade records and color analysis are more reliable methods than traditional visual technique. |
