Summary, etc. | This thesis presents two innovative designs utilizing photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) for two applications: broadband dispersion compensation and mid-infrared supercontinuum generation (SCG). The performance metrics have been meticulously analyzed using the full vector Finite Element Method. Key PCF properties such as effective area, nonlinearity, dispersion slope, confinement loss, and birefringence are comprehensively reported and evaluated. The first PCF design achieves an impressive large negative dispersion value of approximately -1716 ps/(nm.km) at 1550 nm, with a relative dispersion slope (RDS) matching that of conventional single-mode optical fibers (SMFs) at about 0.0036 nm-1. This feature makes it exceptionally suitable for long-haul dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) broadband transmission systems. The second PCF design is optimized for SCG applications, offering two operational regimes. In the anomalous dispersion regime, it generates a coherent and expansive SC spectrum covering wavelengths from 1.6 µm to 7.8 µm. In the All-Normal Dispersion (ANDi) regime, it produces a broad, ultra-flat, and highly coherent SC spectrum ranging from 1.8 µm to 4.2 µm with 20 dB spectral flatness. Both designs are compatible with the five-telecommunication optical bands (O-, E-, S-, C-, and L- bands) commonly used in traditional optical fiber and WDM transmission systems, demonstrating their versatility and potential for advancing current optical communication technologies |
