| Summary, etc. | The lion (Panthera leo), a notable member of the Panthera genus originating from Africa and India. Researches on hematology, blood biochemistry, and gastrointestinal parasitic infections in lions remains relatively scarce. This lack of extensive study has resulted in few available references for interpreting findings. Therefore, this study aimed to gather current data on skin affection and gastrointestinal parasite infections among captive lion populations in Egypt. Additionally, it sought to compare hematological and biochemical parameters with existing studies' normal reference ranges, and to evaluate these parameters between healthy and diseased lions. This assessment aims to provide baseline health information on captive lions, offering valuable insights for future research in this field. <br/>This study was conducted on total 45 lions classified into two main groups, the first group of 30 lion that took place between December 2022 till June 2023 used for investigation of gastrointestinal parasitic infestation by fecal sample, while the second group of total 15 lion that classified into three groups included 8 apparentley healthy group, 4 GIT parasitic infested group and 3 fungal affected group). This study was conducted between December 2022 till December 2023 and used for hematological and biochemical investegations.<br/>Regarding the examination of fecal samples, macroscopic inspection yielded negative results for all samples. However, microscopic analysis revealed the presence of two types of eggs: toxascaris leonine eggs and taenia eggs.<br/>Regarding hematological parameters, no significant difference was found between healthy and diseased groups while selected biochemical parameters between healthy and diseased groups, showed no significant differences observed except for ALT and phosphorus. Significant differences were found between the fungal and parasitic groups in these parameters, although no significant differences were found when comparing the two diseased groups with the control group. |
