Melasma is an acquired pigmentary disorder with irregular macular lesions that varies from light to dark brown or grey - brownThe face and the other sun exposed areas are the sites of affectionImportant probable causes : hormonal factors ; as pregnancy and contraceptive pills , sun exposure or idiopathicDifferent treatment modalities have been used for the treatment of melasma including : topical treatment using sunscreens , alpha hydroxy acids , retinoids , vitamin C , vitamin E , azelaic acid cream , kojic acid and skin bleaching creams containing hydroquinone 2 and 4Chemical peeling using glycolic acid , phenol and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) have been also usedOther treatment modalities include laser and dermabrasionWe treated 30 cases of melasma in our study , all were femalesThey were all primed with hydroquinone cream , retinoic acid and all were advised to avoid sun exposure as much as possible and use sun screensGroup (A) used trichloroacetic acid as a chemical peeling alone , while we added vitamin C topically in group (B) , which showed better results and delayed recurrenc , e |
