| Summary, etc. | Background: We aimed in this randomized clinical trial to compare the results of traditional versus stapled hemorrhoidectomy for treatment of third and fourth degree hemorrhoids. Methods:Thirty patients admitted for surgical treatment of prolapsing hemorrhoids were randomly assigned to traditional (n=15) or stapled hemorrhoidectomy (n=15). All patients received standardized preoperative and postoperative analgesic and laxative regimens. Patients were compared for postoperative pain, continence and sphincter thickness. Results: No statistically significant difference was found regarding postoperative pain or sphincter thickness between both groups. Stapled hemorrhoidectomy showed significant improvement of continence score unlike open surgery. Conclusion: both procedures are safe effective surgical procedures for treatment of hemorrhoidectomy with better functional results achieved with stapled hemorrhoidectomy. With no significant change of the internal anal sphincter thickness and integrity between the two procedure |
