| Summary, etc. | The study was carried on thirty epileptic patients and thirty matched normal control subjects. Measurement of serum: calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, parathormone and alkaline phosphatase levels were done for included subjects. DEXA scan was performed also at three regions (lumbar spine, left femur and left radius) for all subjects.Results: There was a statistically highly significant difference between epileptic patients and control subjects regarding all laboratory markers of bone health. Serum calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D were significantly lower, whereas, serum parathormone (PTH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were significantly higher in epileptic patients compared to normal subjects. Bone mineral density abnormalities were detected in 22 patients (73.4%) (Seventeen patients (56.7%) had osteopenia and five patients (16.7%) had osteoporosis). A statistically significant difference as regards DEXA scan measurements at different regions was detected between epileptic patients and normal control subjects. It was found that epileptic patients receiving enzyme inducers had significantly lower serum (calcium, phosphorous and vit. D) And bone mineral density results in comparison to those on enzyme inhibitor AEDs. There was a significant positive correlation between (bone mineral density and T- score) results and serum level of calcium, phosphorous and vit. D, while a significant negative correlation was detected between (BMD and T-score) results and serum alkaline phosphatase and duration of therapy. While there was no correlation between (BMD and T-score) results and age, age at disease onset nor parity. An annual increased risk of 1.366 was found in epileptic patients receiving AEDs in comparison to normal controls.Conclusion: Abnormal bone health is more common in epileptic patients compared to normal subjects. These abnormalities may be attributed mainly to prolonged intake of AEDs especially enzyme inducers |
