Ginkgo biloba leaves were examined for their proximate analysis (based on dry wt). Flavonoid compounds in Ginkgo biloba leaves extract were estimated by using HPLC. Results of the proximate analysis revealed that moisture, ash, crude protein, total lipid, crude fiber and total carbohydrate of Ginkgo biloba leaves are 79.18%, 16.44%, 3.93%, 4.86%, 13.59%, and 74.77%, respectively. Isorhamnetin represents the highest amount (28.2056%) followed by catechin hydrate (15.1347%), eriodictyol (8.0492%), quercetin (5.5179%), ferulic acid(4.7164%), quercetrin (2.9307%), rutin (2.1532%), caffeine (2.0351%), narengin (1.5054%), apegenin (1.2922%), caffiec acid (0.9222%), hisperidin (0.8883%), luteolin (0.1544%), 7-hydroxy flavon(0.1186%) , kaempeferol (0.1135%), rosmarinic (0.1021%), narenginin (0.0892%), hispertin (0.0668%), beside other unknown flavonoid compounds. Cataract was induced in experimental animal by using sodium selenite. Animals were classified into eight groups, normal, cataract, normal and cataract groups treated with 40, 60,100 mg/kg bw G.B. Ophthalmic examination was done to all groups. The levels of Catalase, MDA, TAO, lipid profiles, liver and kidney functions were measured in serum and the levels of reduced glutathione, malondialdehyde and nitric oxide were estimated in the lens. The best results of lipid profile, oxidative stress markers, liver and kidney function were observed in the group treated with 100mg/kg b.w Ginkgo biloba extract. This study concluded that, a protective effect of Ginkgo biloba extract to delay or retard the progression of cataract development |
