| Summary, etc. | The majority of individuals with psychiatric morbidity in the community are usually seen at the primary care level. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of common mental disorders among patients aged (18-60) years attending the family medicine outpatient clinics, in Kasr Alainy Faculty of medicine, Cairo university. A cross-sectional descriptive study including 360 participants. Participants, who scored above the cut-off value (11) in the GHQ-12, were subjected to the Arabic version of the mental health cChecklists of the ICD-10 PC version in order to determine the prevalence of psychiatric disorders. Of all the respondents, (25.6%) scored positive on the GHQ-12. The overall prevalence of psychiatric disorders was estimated at (16.1%) of the studied participants. The study revealed that the commonest mental disorders were anxiety disorders (16.7%), followed by MDD (9.7%), sleep disorders (8.9%), chronic tiredness disorder (7.2%), and SUD (3.6%). The least common mental disorders were unexplained somatic complains (1.7%), psychosis (1.4%) and dissociative disorders (0.28%). Education (studying up to secondary level); (P=0.000, OR=0.702) and living in urban areas (P=0.000, OR = 0.451) were protective factors against psychiatric morbidity. The presence of any ICD-10 mental disorder (P=0.03, OR = 4.215) was associated with about 3 folds increased risk of psychiatric morbidity. Being a male P=0.000, OR=0.246, and married P=0.003, OR=0.892 were protective factors against psychiatric disorders |
