Summary, etc. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common medical complications of pregnancy. The physiologic changes related to pregnancy make healthy women susceptible to serious infectious complications. Urinary tract infections can lead to poor maternal and perinatal outcomes. Screening of pregnant women for UTI can minimize these UTI associated complications. To assess performance of the rapid dipstick test versus microscopic examination of urine sediment in the screening for bacteriuria among pregnant females. This is a cross sectional comparative study including 160 pregnant females aging 18-35 years attending antenatal care clinic at family health center in Hadayek Helwan. Participants were asked about cardinal symptoms of urinary tract infection. UTI was screened using urine dipsticks versus microscopic examination of urine sediment. One hundred and twenty-eight pregnant women were enrolled at the mean (SD) gestational age of 22±5.5 weeks. (70.3%) had symptoms suggestive of UTI. The prevalence of bacteriuria, using more than 3- 5 bacterium / HPF as a significant level of bacteriuria, was (14.9%) The prevalence of bacteriuria among symptomatic and asymptomatic pregnant women were (10.2%), and (4.7%), respectively, with no significant difference between the two groups. (40.6%) had a history of UTI in previous pregnancy. There was significant association between the socio-demographic and bacteriuria. The sensitivity of leucocytes esterase for detecting pyuria (cut off value of pyuria was > or = 10 pus cells/hpf) was moderately sensitive (68%) and specific (85.4%) and had a high negative predicted value (91.6%) whereas the sensitivity for nitrite for detection of bacteriuria was low (26.3%). The specificity of nitrite test was 100%
