| Summary, etc. | Peritoneal dialysis (PD) was the first modality used for renal replacement therapy (RRT) for patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) because of its inherent advantages as compared to hemodialysis. It is an inexpensive modality, does not require highly trained staff or a complex apparatus and can be easily initiated. PD has been successfully used in AKI involving patients with hemodynamic instability. PD is the modality of choice in renal replacement therapy in newborn and pediatric age groups. Aim of the work: To highlight the indications, types, advantages, disadvantages, and the possible complications of peritoneal dialysis as a mode of therapy in neonates with AKI for a better understanding and mastering of this dialytic procedure. Patient and methods: This retrospective study was conducted at the neonatology department at Cairo university children's hospital; Faculty of medicine, Egypt. The medical records of 40 neonates with acute kidney injury who were managed by acute peritoneal dialysis were reviewed. Results: This study included 40 infants treated in our NICU between January 2011 and December 2015. We retrospectively analyzed these patients{u2019} records. PD procedure was performed. Statistical evaluation was performed by using Chi-square test and Student t-test. In these 40 neonates, the average gestational age and birth weight were 37.05±2.15 weeks and 2591.50±494.25 g, respectively. Among 40 neonates, 11 patients died. PD-related complications were seen in 77.5% of the studied patients in the form of catheter dysfunction. In conclusion, PD has been successfully used in AKI involving patients with hemodynamic instability |
