Significant advances in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer have been made which increased the complexity of treatment decision-making and reinforced the need for a team approach. In MDT meetings, the core team members of relevant specialties participate to share their knowledge aiming to ensure that all patients receive timely diagnosis and treatment, that patient management is evidence-based, and that there is continuity of care. In this study, we are trying to evaluate the effectiveness of the role of breast cancer MDT in NEMROCK. Approach: This retrospective study was carried out at Kasr Alainy center of clinical oncology (NEMROCK) during the period between January 2011 and December 2015. The study comprises 584 women with breast cancer, 278 patients in the MDT group, while 306 patients in the non-MDT group. The patients{u2019} files were reviewed and extrapolation of data was performed. Results: Patients in both groups were not evenly distributed, more patients in stage III were found in the MDT group, and therefore patients receiving neo-adjuvant therapy. Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy patients in the MDT group were more likely to receive the standard of care regimen (Anthracyclines and Taxanes), and ending up with more patients achieving cCR (30.5% vs. 12% respectively). The difference in time from diagnosis till start of treatment between the MDT and control group was not statistically significant 4.49 weeks vs. 3.72 respectively (P=0.19). Regarding the type of surgery done, more BCS were done in the control group 35% of the surgeries vs. 27.5% in the MDT group, P=0.055 |
