Summary, etc. |
Background: The relationship between obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes has fundamental clinical implications. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is one of the most common complications in diabetic patients with variable grades ranging from grade I to grade IV hepatic steatosis. Low CLA is a consequence of the presence of obesity and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in diabetic patients. Objectives: Assessing the link between CLA and HOMA-IR in type 2 diabetic patients with variable values of BMI and also with variable grades of hepatic steatosis diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography. Methods: The study was conducted on 50 type 2 diabetic patients with variable BMI values and variable grades of NAFLD diagnosed by abdominal ultrasound. The patients were subjected to anthropometric measures, total lipid profile, serum CLA, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin level, liver enzymes (ALT and AST), and calculation of HOMA-IR. Results: There were a significant difference between diabetic patients and normal control participants regarding anthropometric measurements, liver enzymes (ALT and AST), fasting blood sugar, fasting insulin level and total lipid profile. HOMA-IR was higher in diabetic patients with high BMI and grade IV hepatic steatosis. Low levels of CLA were recorded in diabetic obese patients with grade III and grade IV hepatic steatosis when compared with diabetic obese patients with both grades I and II hepatic steatosis |
