| Summary, etc. | Background: A cochlear implant is an electronic prosthetic device that is surgically placed in the inner ear and under the skin behind the ear for the purpose of providing useful sound perception via electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. Cochlear implants are intended to provide prelingually or postlingually deafened children and postlingually adults. Methods: 50 subjects who underwent cochlear implantation in tertiary referral hospital in Khartoum between 2009-2011, were evaluated through full history, satisfaction questionnaire, neural telemetry, impedance telemetry and electric ABR. Objectives: To evaluate selection criteria, techniques and audiological outcomes of cochlear implantation in Sudan. Results Fifty patients were enrolled in this study. Nineteen patients (38%) were males, while 31(62%) were females.The mean age of diagnosing hearing loss was 24 months while the age at the time of implantation is 6 years which is far beyond the optimum age of implantation. Thirty-Seven (74%) of the studied patient live inside Khartoum state, while thirteen (26%) live outside Khartoum state. According to self-report of the studied patient fifteen (30%) have family history of hearing loss and this reflects the genetic part as an aetiology. Among studied patients the cause of hearing loss is unknown in thirty seven patients (64%) while the known causes were (36%); the commonest known etiology among our studied population was meningitis and measles |
