Summary, etc. The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is composed of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons. The peripapillary RNFL, in particular, comprises all nerve fibers entering the optic nerve disc. Therefore, evaluating the peripapillary RNFL is useful in detecting RGC damage and in understanding the pathophysiology of neuro-ophthalmic disease. Thickness of the peripapillary RNFL is a useful measure, and recent advances in diagnostic equipment allow for noninvasive measurement of RNFL thickness (RNFLT)⁽¹⁾Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive, high-resolution imaging technique to measure total retinal thickness, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, and optic nerve head morphology. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a potential tool to quantify changes in the degree of optic disc edema and to monitor the efficacy of treatment interventions. OCT is a cross-sectional imaging technique that quantitatively assesses multiple layers of the retina, allowing measurement of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness with a resolution of approximately 5 microns with spectral domain SD-OCT⁽²⁾
