Summary, etc. Sepsis is a serious and life-threatening clinical condition that generally results from a primary bacterial infection or, less frequently, from a fungal and/or viral infection. Rapid and accurate profiling of infection-causing pathogens remains a significant challenge in modern health care. Despite advances in molecular diagnostic techniques, blood culture analysis remains the gold standard for diagnosing sepsis. However, this method is too slow and cumbersome to significantly influence the initial management of patients. The swift initiation of precise and targeted antibiotic therapies depends on the ability of a sepsis diagnostic test to capture clinically relevant organisms along with antimicrobial resistance as fast as possible. Aim of the work: Our study aimed to study the effect of rapid molecular detection of sepsis in cancer patient at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Cairo University on the type and duration of the antibiotics used, the duration of hospitalization, morbidity and mortality.Patients and Methods: This study was conducted on 120 of critically ill National Cancer Institute (NCI) pediatric cancer patients suspected to have sepsis according to a revised consensus conference definition in 2001(Sepsis 2); divided into two groups each of 60 patients. In the first group (group I) blood samples (for rapid molecular detection (PCR) method) and blood cultures were collected from patients suspected to have sepsis, while in the second group (group II) blood cultures only were collected. Samples were sent to microbiology laboratory of National Cancer Institute (NCI) within a year from (December 2017 to December 2018)
